Rotational Team Kumite

Revolving Team Kumite Rules

How athletes score a point, the prohibited behavior, and types are the same as USA Karate Rules stated above. However, there are 6 chui levels, rather than 5 and there will be no senchu.

3-person team, one change coach per team. If your team wants an alternate in case of injury, this must be brought to the attention of the Tournament Director before 12:00 noon, the day of the tournament.

For a diagram how the event is laid out, please look down further on 7 to “Diagram.”

Divisions (mixed male and Female divisions, subject to change if all female divisions can be made (2, 3, or 4 person-team).

7-9  (Use 12 and up, no touch to face kumite contact rules. No 10 second rule.)

10-12  (Use 12 and up, no touch to face kumite contact rules. Not 10 second rule.)

13-15 Use 12 and up, no touch to face kumite contact rules.  With 10 second rule.

With any injury, coach can change out athlete, but they cannot return for that match with that team.

The entire match is a Runtime 6 minutes. This runtime is on the “clock,” which has nothing to do with “change timer.” The Clock will continue despite all events except for:

  1. Injury that needs to be addressed. Any injury requiring more than 10      seconds must be changed out at 10 seconds. The clock will be stopped for any injury to be addressed so they can exit the tatami in a safe way. The injured athlete can still be let back into the competition based on the doctor, coaches, and Referees discretion. However, this can NOT be used as a strategy to give rest to a team, therefore, If there is an exaggeration call, the team member is allowed to be changed out, but the team receives an immediate hansuko chui (5 chuis).

  1. Safety equipment issues
  2. Administrative mistakes that require correction. Referees must stop the bout to      correct the administrative procedure.

Scoring points are done the same way as Individual kumite listed under the Individual Kumite Page of this Website.

Changing and Athletes

The change timer counts down from 15 and is reset at the point the Referee says “hajume” (begin) after a successful or unsuccessful change has been made. The change timer is NOT reset with the “hajume” to give a point, foul, or any other reason that led to a restart of the match.

For example, if the referee stops the match to give a penalty, foul, or anything that leads to a restart of a match, the change time is not reset. The change timer is only reset when an athlete has been successfully or unsuccessfully changed and is reset at “hajume” to continue.”

Successful attempts to change the team completes an athlete change without committing a foul.

Unsuccessful attempt to change an athlete. If a foul is awarded because an athlete was signal to a change but committed a foul, then the athlete receives a foul then remains in the competition area for at least another 15 seconds. The would constitute as an unsuccessful attempt to change.

When a coach gives the signal to “change” the change judge puts the flag up that corresponds to whatever coach said “change” first.

At this point the referee stops the match because the change judge signals a coach has requested a change within the confines of the rules. (If both judges say “change,” it remains the decision of the Change Judge to decide who said ‘change” first).

The Referee does NOT stop the match on the coaches’ command to change.

ONLY ONE coach can change their athlete at one time

The event must remain fluid and there is a quick distribution of fouls, points, and commands, followed by a quick restart by the referee.

This event will require:

1 Referee, 4 judges, 1 cansa, 2 table operators, one change judge, two coaches, and two teams (team can be made up of: 2, 3, 4, or 3 with one alternatives) – 10 operators, not counting the athletes and 3 dispute board members (one vote each).

At 15 seconds, :Atoshi Baraku” will be announced by the referee. At this point, the change judge roles up the flags as there is NO change at this point and certain fouls of avoiding combat, jogi, holding, etc. will result in a hansuko chui, just as listed for the Spirit of Denver Karate Championships.

In addition, for the fouls listed for individual kumite, Revolving Team Kumite has additional fouls that will be given for the following behavior.

Additional fouls given other than given only in Revolving Team kumite

  1. During the change of two athletes on the same team run      into each other (touching each other at all).
  2. Not changing out the athlete in more than 3 seconds.
  3. More than one athlete in the ring during the change.
  4. Athletes giving commands as a coach to the athletes      currently in the ring competing. Athletes can give strategy comments to each other and the coach at any      time if they are not in the ring competition. The coach can communicate with ANY      athlete of their team anytime. Communication among coaches and athletes remains essential,      however, if anyone other than the coach is giving instructions to the      athlete in the middle of their bout, a foul (chui) will be given to the      entire team. This rests with the      referee’s obligation and discretion.
  5. Coaches distracting the Change Judge with anything

more than a comment of “change.” Coaches can say change several times and loud as they want without      being distinctive or overly aggressive.

Ties are the team with the most Ippons, followed by the most wazaries, then hante.

Ties are Not determined with what team scored first for Revolving Team Kumite only.  There is NO sentu given in the entire event.
